5 Mood Records for Halloween

Well, it’s happened again. Halloween has come out of nowhere and you need something to listen to. Whether you want some records to get you in the mood, or just a soundtrack for Halloween night, these are five of our favorite (and not-so-obvious) spooky records that are sure to be give to get you in the spirit of All Hallow’s Eve. 🎃

1. Vincent Price

Witchcraft Magic: An Adventure in Demonology

witchcraftmagic

Mood: In one form or another, it’s a night in and you want to listen to something…perhaps learn a bit about the history of witchcraft?

Vincent Price runs through what more or less are history lessons and how-to’s on the various subjects under witchcraft, along with a few short scary stories mixed in.

This is a great pick if you can give it 100% of your attention (especially with headphones). But this would also work well for your Halloween party as a curious soundtrack guests can easily tune in and out of.

Go-to track: Nothing more straightforward or informative than “How To Make A Pact with the Devil”.

2. Black Sabbath

Master of Reality

masterofreality

Mood: You want to get dark, but you also want to rock. You’re not one for scary stories or creepy soundtracks, but you want those sinister undertones while you air-guitar.

Master of Reality will put a little pep in your step when you’re answering the door, and likely pique the curiosity of trick-or-treaters coming and going.

Go-to track: It doesn’t get any heavier or darker than closing track “Into The Void” 🤘

3. Goblin

Suspiria

goblin

Mood: First off, nothing beats the experience of actually watching Suspiria with the Goblin backing tracks. But if you must, given the right setting the soundtrack alone can send quite a chill up your spine.

Good for background ambience or a full-attention listen.

Go-to track: If you just want the one-two combo, you can’t miss with the “Celesta and Bells” track. Two beautifully timbered instruments never sounded so eerie. Put it on repeat, turn out the lights and just let your imagination get the best of you.

4. Dean Hurley

Anthology Resource Vol. 1

deanhurley

Mood: If you like David Lynch, but also really enjoy sound effect records.

That is of course not to downplay the brilliance of sound designer Dean Hurley. This collection of ambient sounds is truly remarkable. Fans of Twin Peaks: The Return will certainly recognize much of it as backing tracks for much of the season. Vol. 1 is mesmerizing as much as it is disorienting. Unsettling…in the best way.

Go-to track: “Night Electricity Theme”

5. Various Artists

Disney Villains: Simply Sinister Songs

disneyvillains

Mood: You’re a parent and you can’t exactly put on anything too creepy and expect good results with the kiddos. Simply Sinister Songs is a nice compromise.

Listen to some classic Disney Villain tunes you and your kids can sing along to and relive a bit of your own childhood in the process. Follow it up with a viewing of the rollicking Disney Halloween compilation.

Go-to track: “Cruella De Vil” – Bill Lee
